Providers of excellence in primary care workforce development

The Practice Managers Association (PMA) is a UK-wide membership body that provides insight,
training, education and interaction opportunities for those involved in general practice.

As an ILM and City & Guilds approved centre, the PMA is recognised as a provider of excellence in primary care workforce development. Having worked with many NHS organisations over the years, the PMA has successfully trained staff in most areas of primary care across the UK.

The PMA provide a wide selection of workshops and diploma courses specifically for primary care staff in line with the recommendations set out in the General Practice Forward View (GPFV). Don’t just take our word for it…

“Each session was well presented and full of useful information. Most notably Practice Managers who had been in the industry a long time felt these sessions highlighted a number of issues and gave lots of ideas and information to help with the day to day running of the practice. Also appreciated was the opportunity to network and gain insight and learning throughout this.”

“Just wanted to say what a truly fantastic job the PMA are doing. It’s so brilliant to be finally recognised for the professionals we are and to find such genuine interest in our role and future. Every session has been valuable – both in providing new information and ideas, but also helping me realise how much we are actually doing right already.”

“Those leading the courses had a high level of expertise in their subject matter which meant that they were able to deal with queries as well as deliver the core agenda, and the courses were very well tailored to the audience, so they were extremely relevant.”

“PMA’s model of recruiting experts in different fields to deliver focused training within the PMA framework is one that has been met with much approval amongst practice managers in the London Borough of Lewisham. Lewisham CEPN will be escalating the evaluation summary to HEE, with our recommendation that they consider commissioning at scale.”

PMA GP Practice Manager – ILM Level 5 Diploma in Leadership & Management

The PMA GP Practice Manager ILM Level 5 Diploma course is designed for those already working in an established management role. It is set at a standard suitable for those who are managing teams or projects and are responsible for achieving operational or departmental goals as part of their organisations strategy. They may be accountable to a more senior manager or the business owners. Other responsibilities may include managing change, financial and resource management, talent management, coaching and mentoring.

PMA GP Assistant Practice Manager ILM Level 3 Diploma in Leadership & Management

This course and qualification is ideal for those aspiring into a management role and who may subsequently move into full practice management. It is suitable for new or existing employees who are expected to develop the skills necessary to lead or manage teams. Candidates are expected to have some management responsibilities, like supporting, managing and developing team members, leading projects or planning and monitoring workloads and resources. They may also be responsible for delivering operational plans, resolving problems, or building work relationships with colleagues at the same level or above.

Prescription Clerk

The Developing the Role of a Prescription Clerk module is aimed at practice managers, receptionists and administrative staff who wish to broaden their knowledge of Medicines Management within General Practice. Receptionists are often the first point of contact in general practice for patients when it comes to ordering their repeat medications or when they have a query concerning them. They can play a ‘hidden’ crucial role in the highly complex process of repeat prescribing and the collaboration between clinical and administrative staff is crucial to maintaining the quality and safety of prescribing.

PMA Medical Administrator/GP Assistant – Apprenticeship Standard and City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration

Employers will have the choice of focusing on a Medical Administrators qualification or a GP Assistant depending on the needs and workforce skills base of their practice. Both will include a highly transferable set of skills built around the core elements of the Business Administration Diploma such as communication, organisational, decision-making, interpretation of information and IT skills. These two diplomas will then be contextualised to include specific areas within the primary care environment.
