Welcome to the Practice Managers Association

Providers of excellence in primary care workforce development

The Practice Managers Association (PMA) is a UK-wide membership body that provides insight,
training, education and interaction opportunities for those involved in general practice.

As an ILM and City & Guilds approved centre, the PMA is recognised as a provider of excellence in primary care workforce development. Having worked with many NHS organisations over the years, the PMA has successfully trained staff in most areas of primary care across the UK.

The PMA provide a wide selection of workshops, apprenticeship standards and diploma courses specifically for primary care staff in line with the recommendations set out in the General Practice Forward View (GPFV). Although GPFV has a strong focus on practice manager, receptionist and clerical staff training, there is still a long way to go to fulfil the aims set out in the plan.

Our comprehensive range of workshops and qualifications cover all aspects of business management, people management and practice skills. Have a look at the full range of workshops and qualifications on the website. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, get in touch. We’re always here to help. We take your development very seriously; adopting a friendly and flexible approach to helping you develop your skills and drive continuous improvement.

The PMA have achieved the Skills for Health Quality Mark. This demonstrates the organisation’s training provision meets a nationally recognised quality benchmark. Skills for Health have fully endorsed our training delivery and verified the quality the PMA provide as a training provider.

The PMA are proud to announce achievement of the matrix Standard. The matrix Standard is a unique quality standard for organisations to assess and measure their advice and support services, which ultimately supports individuals in their choice of career, learning, work and life goals. This is a hugely important milestone, bringing reassurances about the quality standards we provide you.

The PMA are delighted to have gained Direct Claim Status (DCS) from ILM. By granting DCS, ILM have acknowledged that the PMA have demonstrated best practice in quality assurance processes, in accordance with strict requirements for training and assessment. We are now able to award qualifications to delegates following our own rigorous internal assessment and verification process meaning that delegate results and certificates can be issued sooner that many other ILM centres.

As an ILM and City & Guilds accredited centre, the PMA seeks to facilitate and promote best practice, offering education and support to those involved in primary care.

The overall aim of the PMA is to encourage the sharing of knowledge & help those involved in general practice attain the highest standards.

We’d be delighted to welcome you, it’s free to join!

Don’t just take our word for it…

“Each session was well presented and full of useful information. Most notably Practice Managers who had been in the industry a long time felt these sessions highlighted a number of issues and gave lots of ideas and information to help with the day to day running of the practice. Also appreciated was the opportunity to network and gain insight and learning throughout this.”

“Just wanted to say what a truly fantastic job the PMA are doing. It’s so brilliant to be finally recognised for the professionals we are and to find such genuine interest in our role and future. Every session has been valuable – both in providing new information and ideas, but also helping me realise how much we are actually doing right already.”

“Those leading the courses had a high level of expertise in their subject matter which meant that they were able to deal with queries as well as deliver the core agenda, and the courses were very well tailored to the audience, so they were extremely relevant.”

“PMA’s model of recruiting experts in different fields to deliver focused training within the PMA framework is one that has been met with much approval amongst practice managers in the London Borough of Lewisham. Lewisham CEPN will be escalating the evaluation summary to HEE, with our recommendation that they consider commissioning at scale.”

New Care Models – Working at Scale

Working at Scale has become a key driver across general practice and all other areas of the wider NHS – presenting opportunities for new ways of working and for the development of new services all driven by the goal of improving patient care. ‘At Scale’ provision of care, will increasingly see practices shift towards collaborative working models – formal mergers, partnerships and federations and Multi-Specialty Community Providers (MCPs) – key advantages of this approach are the ability for practices to build on their strengths, improve their reach and also share the workload. But what are the practicalities of working at scale?
