Newly announced capacity and funding for apprenticeships

The Chancellor’s recent news aimed at supporting jobs brings additional funding for apprenticeships.

What does that mean for practices in Primary Care?

Practices can have up to 10 apprentices at any given time, with a mix of new apprentices and existing team members.

Incentive payments for hiring a new apprentice have changed. Employers who hire new apprentices between 1 August 2020 and 31 January 2021 could get:

  • £2,000 for apprentices aged 16 to 24
  • £1,500 for apprentices aged 25 and over

Practices can apply from 1 September 2020, and spend the payment on anything they need to support their organisation. This is in addition to the £1,000 payment already given to help employers meet the needs of some groups of apprentices in the workplace.

We have already seen evidence of the benefits apprenticeships can make to practices in terms of efficiency, team working and motivation. This extra funding is an excellent incentive to support and develop young people as new employees or as part of succession planning in the practice.
