The PMA Awards Programme 2021 will recognise and celebrate excellence in management across all areas of the health and social care sector.

The PMA Awards Programme 2021 will recognise and celebrate excellence in management across all areas of the health and social care sector.

There are 7 categories:
Each with a list of criteria against which nominees will be evaluated.

Across all categories, the winners will be able to demonstrate a dynamic input to practice, PCN or other healthcare environment which are both measurable and of value to the practice, the PCN and the patients.

The judges will be looking for excellence in terms of input and the quality of outcomes. The winner and highly recommended recipients will be individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their role.

PMA invites applications from all managers – you can nominate yourself – and nominations are also sought from practice colleagues.

The deadline for applications will be Sept 10th, 2021

Shortlists will be announced on Sept 30th 2021 and the Awards will be presented
at Best Practice 2021 in Birmingham on 13th Oct 2021.

Award Categories

Practice Business Manager of the Year 2021

This award seeks to recognise a Practice Business Manager who has made an outstanding contribution to their practice’s performance over the last 18 months.

We invite applications from both Practice Managers themselves and nominations from practice colleagues.

  • delivery of exceptional patient-focused services and the benefit of these services on their patients, practice or the local area
  • outstanding leadership and innovation, resulting in improved practice performance, staff development, delivery of services etc.
  • evidence and examples of excelling over and above contractual requirements during the pandemic
  • development of working relationships with primary, secondary, social care and the voluntary sector
  • lead roles in primary care programmes in conjunction with NHSE, CCG, LMC, GP Federation or other primary care organisations resulting in the development of their practice/PCN and/or other organisations
  • sustained improvements in any area of business delivery over the last year.

Practice Manager of the Year 2021

This award seeks to recognise a Practice Manager who has made an outstanding contribution to their practice’s performance over the last 18 months.

We invite applications from both Practice Managers themselves and nominations from practice colleagues.

  • delivery of patient-focused services and the impact of these services on their patients, practice or the local area
  • creative skill mixing, workforce development maximising the potential of practice staff, cross pollination and the introduction of new and evolving roles.
  • outstanding leadership and innovation, resulting in improved practice performance
  • resilience and wellbeing – examples of exemplary systems and processes
  • sustained improvements in any area of practice management over the last year.

PCN Manager of the Year 2021

This award seeks to recognise a PCN Manager who has made an outstanding contribution to their PCN’s performance over the last 12 months.

We invite applications from both Practice Managers themselves and nominations from practice colleagues.

  • development of new relationships with other partners across primary, secondary, social care and the voluntary sector
  • innovative workforce development and the use of ARRs
  • advances in population health management using data to direct patient care and deliver services
  • engagement with local populations to address whole population needs particularly in relation to vulnerable, isolated and/or lonely patients
  • significant expansion of their use of digital platforms and other innovation to improve patient access during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • improvement in service delivery across the PCN, improving and making services less hard-to-reach for patients who find it harder to access them
  • becoming true partners in patient’s care and the impact on population health.

Administration/Reception Manager of the Year 2021

This award seeks to recognise an Admin/Reception Manager who has made an outstanding contribution to their surgery’s performance over the last 12 months.

We invite applications from both Practice Managers themselves and nominations from practice colleagues.

  • outstanding leadership and positive influence on patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction including improving access for patients.
  • workforce development maximising the potential of reception staff to address the needs of patients and to assist freeing GPs’ time
  • engendering a culture of continuous improvement and supportive teamworking.

Receptionist of the Year 2021

This award seeks to recognise a practice receptionist who has made an outstanding contribution to their surgery’s performance over the last 12 months.

  • outstanding customer service skills, IT skills, communication and organisational skills; working with accuracy and initiative
  • positive influence on patient outcomes, safety, and overall satisfaction
  • evidence of taking a proactive approach to self-development and linking this to the benefits brought to patients and the wider practice team.

Outstanding contribution to General Practice 2021

This award seeks to recognise a person who has made an outstanding contribution to General Practice over the last 12 months.

We invite applications from both Practice Managers themselves and nominations from practice colleagues.

  • achievement above and beyond expectations of their role resulting in significant patient benefit in the practice and wider community.
  • proactivity in sharing best practice so patients and communities further afield/nationwide can also benefit.

Lifetime Achievement Award 2021

This Award seeks to recognise outstanding and sustained contributions to the Health and Care sector over a career in Practice and or Business Management.

Nominations are invited – from all managers and other general practice staff – as ‘peer to peer’ recognition of the contributions made by the individual nominated.

  • Recognition for their work and commitment in General Practice.
  • Outstanding and sustained contributions to the Health and Care sector over a career in Practice and or Business Management.
  • Significant impact in, for example, their CCG, LMC, Training Hub or ICS and in supporting other practices and health care organisations.
  • Recognition for their commitment in developing professionalism across the Health and Care sector.
