According to the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE, 2017), work related stress, anxiety and depression continue to represent a significant ill health condition in the workforce of Great Britain. Work related stress accounts for 37% of work related ill health and 45% of days lost, in 2015/16. The occupations and industries reporting the highest rates of work related stress remain consistently in the health and public sectors (HSE 2017).
Furthermore, recent research by the mental health organisation MIND, has revealed that almost nine in ten (88%) primary care workers find their work life stressful, significantly higher than the wider UK workforce (56%). The poll of over 1,000 NHS workers in primary care, including GPs, practice nurses, practice managers and their colleagues, also showed that work is currently the most stressful area of their lives, ahead of their finances, health, family life and relationships.
The psychological impact of work place stress on primary care workers is significant, with two in five (43%) saying that workplace stress has led them to resigning or considering resigning from their jobs. One in five (21%) say it has led them to develop a mental health problem and almost one in ten (8%) say that workplace stress has led to suicidal thoughts. The IAM Approach to Health and Wellbeing is a completely new approach in the field of stress management. It is a deliberately developmental, mindfulness-based stress reduction programme (DD-MBSR), designed to rapidly reduce excessive pressure and quickly restore balance in mind and body. It combines the leading-edge scientific areas of cardiac coherence and neural plasticity, with the art of integral mindfulness. It is a deliberate and conscious approach to re-writing the faulty, toxic programmes that drive negative feelings and emotional disturbance and replaces them with a flowing and balanced objectivity. This in turn leads to a calm, cool and collected outlook, which in the simplest of terms, helps the individual to make more healthy decisions and therefore improve the quality of their life and those around them. The programme is designed to help individuals to clean up their own act and by example, encourages others to do the same.
This introductory workshop will focus on simple and straightforward techniques to help individuals to quickly manage toxic and stressful events as they emerge, and to rapidly restore equilibrium.
